What to do with fabric off cuts....

This post is a little different from the usual...as I am taking a look outside the site for inspiration today!

I don't know about you...but I am forever trying to think up new ways to make the most of my lovely fabrics.

I am a terrible hoarder as it is, and the thought of throwing out a scrap of my favourite fabric is heartbreaking. Unfortunately this often results in bags of off cuts stuffed in a corner of my sewing room until I 'get time' to use them.

I usually keep them for making yo-yos and fabric covered buttons...but I thought I should take a look at some other creative options.

So off I went in search of some wonderful new ways to reduce the waste.

Look what I found.... Patchwork pin cushions (see image) - an absolutely inspired use of the small off cuts & what a lovely little stocking filler for the other sewers in the family. I can't wait to make a few of these myself.

Encraftment emerged from a crafty dullness post-earthquake....

Over the past 11 months rockin'Christchurch has greatly affected alot of crafty businesses.

A few markets were shut down due to the red zone and lack of facilities. Some shops that once stocked products have been closed or worst still demolished. With a lack of new stores opening to sell home crafted ware's, a need was established for a quality market to enable crafters an avenue to sell their wares. The first Winter Encraftment was a huge success in public attendence and stall holders present, reinforcing the need for a quality craft market to become a regular event. The Encraftment team are working towards 3 markets a year. Spring Encraftment 2011 is on September 10th at Villa Maira College Hall 10-3pm! Come and immerse yourself in a whole lot of crafty goodness, there are over 60 stalls to admire and hopefully shop at!

I have never been a great one for surprises, and when it came to knowing what 'flavour' our babies were - I had to know! Unbelievably all three of my little angels managed to keep their mummy guessing as they had their legs tightly closed for the scans. Three pregnancies, three shy scans...and three gorgeous girls, mean my life is a whirlwind of pinks and purples. I am about to become an Aunty and by choice my Brother is not finding out what they are having - which leads me to today's blog. I don't know about you - but I am forever trying to find the perfect system for keeping my sewing threads in order. I use a snap lock box at the moment with all my threads standing upright...however without exception it seems that after a couple of projects this somewhat tidy box ends up a jumbled mess with tangled threads galore!
So I searched the net to try and find inspiration, and thought I would share a few of the options I came across.
If you have a unique and effective system for storing your sewing threads we would love to see them!

Handmade Hobby Horses - A unique piece of nostalga.

Inspired by my own little cowboy, I made a trusty steed (now named Pirate!) and watched the hilarious antics of boy and horse. I decided to make some more and it grew from there!

Little Old Nags Hobby Horses are handmade in Auckland, New Zealand. Each has it’s own look and personality. A great toy to add to the dress-up box, for make believe play, or as a unique decoration in a child’s room.

Little Old Nags come in two different types -Trusty Steeds and Pretty Ponies.

Trusty Steeds - Corduroy. Will be made to order with your specified bridle colour. Allow up to 5 days to be completed.

Pretty Ponies - made from upholstery/other fabrics and with a little more decoration. Some may be made from up-cycled fabrics. These will be pre-made, usually one-off horses that will be added as made. If there is a specific colour scheme you are after however please ask.

The horse’s manes are all made from yarn. The sticks are untreated pine stained only with food grade olive oil. A rubber cap is put on the end of the stick to protect wooden floors, a wheel can be used instead for an extra charge. Safety eyes are used.

These have been tested on small toddlers (my son and his friends) – however due to the presence of some small parts (eyes, bells) I must add the disclaimer that they may not be suitable for children under the age of 3years.

Shipping is by tracked courier within New Zealand. Shipping is from $10.00 within New Zealand, confirmed on purchase.

Please keep hobby-horse out of water. Gentle spot clean only.

Organizing Your Sewing Workspace - Ribbons & Laces

Surely I'm not the only one that makes a New Years resolution only to groan about it a little later in the year (eg on the 2nd of Jan!). But I'm a sucker for punishment so I've gone ahead & made another resolution ..."Keep my workspace inspirational". And if hubby is reading this - no, I'm not going to put money on it!

I have a little while before I have to tackle this, & luckily for me I get to start from scratch again as I'm actually inbetween moving from NZ to Oz. I have a quite a bit of time up my sleeve to research some great ideas & hopefully be set to put them into action.

I've not been one to hoard fabrics & laces etc up until recently so storage of such items is a new dilemma for me. I now have 3x 60L plastic tubs of fabric & 3 or 4 big plastic bags full of lace to deal with. After surfing the net, here's some ideas I have to work with:

Ribbons & Laces

Amazon.com have this cool ribbon storage box that will keep rolls of ribbon tidy & easily accessible. (sold here) I love these because they're clear so you can see exactly what's going on in the boxes!

Alternatively, you can make your own version of this which could turn out much cheaper if several are needed to control your ribbon stash. Martha Stewart has a tutorial here on how to turn a shoe-sized box into the boxes on the right. I might visit Ikea for some lovely boxes & give this one a go! Here's the tutorial.

Paper towel holders are also a pretty cheap & effective way of storing those ribbon rolls too.

So this type of storage is great for rolls but all those loose strands of ribbons have to go somewhere too. Up until now I have just flung them over a rail which was effective but unsightly. A better idea I came across is to buy a simple tiered coat hanger for trousers (view one here from Howards Storage World) & drape the ribbons over the rungs. Keep in place with a pretty peg or big paper clip.

If that is still a little unsightly why not recycle those jam preserve jars & put them on display filled with colourful ribbons. I'm sure we can all find some pretty fabric or paper to make the lids pretty while we're at it ;) You can buy them in all sorts of place if need be. The ones photographed are from Millys Kitchen.

Well, hopefully this has inspired many a crafter to 'pretty-up' their workspace? Next blog will be on tackling all the laces lying around.

I would LOVE to see any photos you have of your workspace or hear about other neat little storage solutions you use. I can't wait to start my sewing room from scratch again!

What makes the perfect 'favourite snuggly toy'

Most of us had that special, cuddly friend that kept us company through our childhood. Some of us had several - & some of us may still have that special someone tucked away for emergencies.

Now that I'm a mum I'm enjoying watching the relationship grow between my kids & their çhosen ones'. My eldest has had a variety of friends the weirdest was Bones - ie the glow in the dark plastic skeleton. Now its a saggy dolphin bought at Seaworld 3 years ago.

My youngest is addicted to her blanket more than anything. That thing goes everywhere! She does love 'Or' the elephant & 'Noisy' the teddy with the bell in the tummy. Oh & then there's ducky, the mini plastic duck. She also has a family of 'My Pony's' that have to be carted about - yep, called pony ... every single one of them called pony. My girls have great imaginations ;)

I've been eyeing off the gorgeous crocheted toys on Little Kiwis Nest and think they have all the makings of a life long friend. Firstly they're nice & soft & made fantastically well (will last the years of kidhandling). It helps that they are totally adorable too!

But what I LOVE LOVE LOVE about these is that they are seriously big! A good tag-along toy needs to have various places to be held easily by little friends - & these fit the bill. Most of the little critters sit about 30cm tall (think the height of your old school ruler) - that's a nice, non-scungy size!

Please tell us who you are & what you do?

I am Vanessa Harper and I make Harpsters, which are fun character wheatbags for kids.

How did you get started? Have you worked in other creative areas before the kind of work you’re doing now?
I've always been a creative type. I've been making all kinds of different things for years - from learning to knit as a girl, to helping Mum make crochet squares for those cool old blankets (Mum and I have been looking for the squares we made recently but I think there have been too many house moves over the years and they've gone missing). I also used to make fimo earrings as a teenager (and I managed to sell a few of those to family and friends). More recently the jewellery has been a little different - I made the necklaces and earrings for myself and my three bridesmaids for my wedding.

I am also a Graphic Designer by trade, which was a great way to be creative and pay the bills too! I still do a little of that, but not in a formal situation since my kids were born.

Is there a story behind the name of your shop?
"Harpsters" comes from joining my surname (Harper) with "monsters", which were the original characters. I've added bunnies to the collection since, and I'm sure there will be other different little guys along the way.

How long have you been creating for?
Since I was a wee girl, but the Harpsters have been in existence since sometime in late 2008.

Is your business a hobby, a profession or a happy marriage of both?
It's a hobby really. My main job is looking after my kids and my home, but I love making things and the Harpsters are a great way to keep the creative side of me alive and earn a little pocket money along the way.

Describe your work setting.

I have two work areas ... on my lap in front of the tv for the cutting and hand-sewing bits, then upstairs in the "office" where my sewing machine and ironing board are set up. And of course, the dining room gets set up with sewing machine and iron sometimes too.

Do you work alone? With a team? Do you engage your family or friends in the work? What is your process? How do you ensure you get your work done yet still have a life?
I work alone, but ask advice and opinions of my husband and other family members and friends. I'm not one of these people that's happy working on my own too much, so the feedback I get from other people is vital to my work.

Most of the work is done in the evening, once the kids are in bed. I'm something of a night-owl, so I will often carry on working long after my husband has gone to bed, then when I eventually crawl into bed my mind is often still racing with ideas (especially when I'm working on something new), so I usually pick up a novel (or solitaire on my iphone!) to clear my head.

Why do you do what you do? What inspires you? When do you get most excited?
Harpsters started out as a way to work through my Post Natal Depression. My sister-in-law once said that Mums really need something to do with their time that "stays done" - you know - when you tidy the kids room then walk back in there ten minutes later and a tornado's been through it again. Harpsters has become MY own thing that stays DONE. It gives me a bit of balance.

Can you remember your first sale? What was it?
My first ever sale would have been a pair of fimo "Buzzy Bee" or "Mary-Lou Doll" earrings as a teenager. But my first Harpster sale was back when I was making them as softies, and I think it was a Hankle. It seems like so long ago that I don't remember the details, but I do remember the excitement at making my first sale! Oh the excitement!

Have you ever been in business before?
Not unless you count Freelance Graphic Design (through Recruitment Agencies) for years. My husband owns a successful business, so he's always got excellent tips and tricks for me.

At what point do you consider yourself successful?
I feel I am successful when I'm happy in what I'm doing, whatever that may be.

Where do you do your best thinking?
In front of the computer often. My wee mind is always ticking over with ideas, but it's usually at the computer or with a pen and paper in hand that they come together.

What stops you from giving up when you are frustrated?
If I'm frustrated I usually walk away from what I'm doing for a while (if possible), and it becomes much less frustrating when I come back to it. Well, that's the theory anyway. :)

If you had time to learn a new skill what would it be?
I'd LOVE to learn to make jewellery - you know - the "real" stuff, with precious stones and shiny silver and gold. I've also got plans to start a silk-screening course soon. I'm really looking forward to that! The Harpster t-shirts might get a re-vamp after that course.

When you are not involved in your craft/business- what can you usually be found doing
Oh boy! Where do I start?! I enjoy spending time with my family - two boisterous ginger-haired boys and an equally boisterous ginger-haired husband. My folks have a bach at Whangamata, which is my favourite spot in the whole wide world - it was the place that felt like "home" when I was feeling homesick in London. I'm a bit sentimental like that. We try to get down there as often as we can. I'm a huge fan of exploring our beautiful country (especially the South Island) and that exploring often incorporates another love - photography. I can also confess to being something of a petrol-head (I'm driving us all down to Whangamata next week in the old 10-seater '76 Chev), but at the same time, I really enjoy creating beautiful food for my family. A foodie? Not quite, but close. Given the time, I do prefer to have home-baking in my house rather than the bought stuff.

Do you have a favourite handmade purchase?
I bought my sister a pair of gorgeous earrings last Christmas that I wish I'd never given away! I've been looking for something similar for myself since then.

Do you buy on impulse or do you go out looking for something you need?
I'm often an impulse buyer - buying something that looks pretty or seems like it'd be the best thing since sliced bread. If there's something I really need (especially if it's a big ticket item) I will often spend a long time researching the best price and the best quality on the internet first.

FAST FIVE ...

1. What is the last thing that made you belly laugh? My eldest son this morning, acting the goat as usual.
2. What book is on your bedside table? Diana Gabaldon's latest - An Echo in the Bone. Bought the week it was released and still unread!
3. What was the last cd/ipod track etc that you listened to? Spandau Ballet - Gold
4. Where do you hide your secret stash of chocolate? I can do without chocolate, but Russian Fudge ... now there's another story! It's never around long enough to have a stash though. :)
5. What statement do you hear yourself say to your kids that remind you of your upbringing? "Life's not fair ... you're better to learn that now." *cringe!*

Meet the Maker - Creative Aertz

Please tell us who you are & what you do?
My name is Sonia Foster (nee Aerts), I am a stay at home mum with two children under 5. I love creating quirky and gorgeous items using my knitting and sewing skills.

How did you get started? Have you worked in other creative areas before the kind of work you’re doing now?
When I had my son I developed Post Natal Depression. As an outlet, and for something especially for me, I picked up my knitting needles, which I hadn't done for years, and started knitting and haven't stopped and so Creative Aertz was born!

Is there a story behind the name of your shop?

My maiden name was Aerts and wanted to incorporate that into a business name so how. As I also have a typing business using the same name I decided to change the "s" at the end of Aerts to a "z" so it didn't look like I had made a typo with the "e" in our name. A typo wouldn't have been a good look to my typing business:-)

How long have you been creating for?
Since I was really little (learnt my skills from my precious Mum). I always designed and knitted my own funky jerseys and made all my dolls clothes.

Is your business a hobby, a profession or a happy marriage of both?

It is a happy marriage of both.

Describe your work setting.

The whole house is my work setting. I have an allocated area in the garage but it is too cold in winter and very lonely so everything tends to gravitate to the dining room table.

Do you work alone? With a team? Do you engage your family or friends in the work? What is your process? How do you ensure you get your work done yet still have a life?

I work alone. My brain is constantly being filled with images of wonderful new things but my needles won't go fast enough to make everything I want to. To ensure I get my work done I knit a few rows at a time through the day and then do most of the work at night while watching my favourite tele programmes.

Why do you do what you do? What inspires you? When do you get most excited?
I have so many ideas in my head and love to create new things and it can be very relaxing. Everything inspires me from an acorn on the ground to licorice allsorts (check out my hats). I get most excited when I make a sale and I check my e-mail all day long to see if I have any orders - sad but true!

Can you remember your first sale? What was it?
My first sale was to our local pharmacy who purchased some of my pillowcase wheatie bags and I was so thrilled I skipped out of the shop.

Have you ever been in business before?
Nope.

At what point do you consider yourself successful?

I consider myself successful when everyone in my family is happy, including me. It is neat to have some pocket money to use for some fun with the kids to create lasting memories for us all.

Where do you do your best thinking?
I do my best thinking in the evenings when I am knitting.

What stops you from giving up when you are frustrated?
The satisfaction I know I will get when I have finished something and when the customer loves their handmade product.

If you had time to learn a new skill what would it be?

I would love to learn how to do patchwork.

When you are not involved in your craft/business- what can you usually be found doing
I am usually doing my housework or playing with the kids.

Do you have a favourite handmade purchase?
I love the green pinafore that I purchased for my daughter from Somerton (on LKN too). She wears it heaps!

Do you buy on impulse or do you go out looking for something you need?
It depends on what mood I am in.

1. What is the last thing that made you belly laugh? When I found a trail of knitting wool all around the lounge and then finding my 1 1/2 year old daughter trying to fight her way out of the web of wool she had found herself in. It wasn't very funny when I realised I had to roll each ball up and unknot everything:-)
2. What was the last cd/ipod track etc that you listened to? Taylor Swift CD.
3. Where do you hide your secret stash of chocolate? Now that would be telling and its all MINE!
4. Who controls the remote in your house? Definitely ME.
5. What was your cheapest holiday? Staying in a luxury 3 storey house at Mount Maunganui for free.

Making memories

When our first daughter was born my husband & I decided we would have professional photos taken each year to chart her growth. Like all good intentions I have slipped a bit but we have 3 out of 5 years worth! Add another child in the mix & there's now double the reason to stick to our family photo shoot resolution! Oh & before you start thinking along the lines of those hideous staged shots of years gone by, times have changed! Our photographers have come with us to our favourite places (beach, park & even our own backyard) to capture our kids being kids in their own environment.

This year I'm planning on challenging Nykie from Mistral Photography to find my kids personalities in her camera lens. Hope she doesn't regret taking me on! The brief will go something along the lines of 'not too much grass or trees; love old run-down buildings; bright light; & definitely quirky'. It will be a little while until I can share the success of our shoot (see, I have complete faith in her!) but I'll be sure to keep you posted.

Nykie recently photographed a mementos occasion for a young family. The baptism of Joe & Anna is definitely something to cherish and I have no doubt these photos will take pride of place in their families home.

Nykie says "Even though I consider myself quite a traditional portrait photographer I do love to expand my style into other areas. Tess Garner who commissioned me to document her children's baptism asked that I produced photos in a more documentary style and I was only too happy to oblige! I enjoyed this project too because it was quite like shooting a mini wedding! ... and kids are always lovely to photograph. They forget I am even there and have no qualms about being themselves."

Fairy Birthday Party

Please tell us who you are & what you do?

We are the daughter (Franda) and mother (Fran) team making and selling the Yours, naturally Baby Care Products and accessories.

How did you get started? Have you worked in other creative areas before the kind of work you’re doing now?
Yours, naturally almost happened by accident. I (Franda) started making a baby balm for my (then) 2 month old son. I love natural and organic products, but just couldn't afford to buy them for him. They are all so expensive! So I thought I could make him one myself. I did some research, looked into some family recipes, and made a batch for our personal use.

Some of my friends wanted to try it as well, and they loved it so much that I started getting orders for more.... so I started selling them!

Since then it evolved into more products, and I also got my Mom (Fran) involved. We are now a registered company, and we supply to quite few online retailers, locally and overseas, and some retail shops.

Before I started Yours, naturally I've always been in creative type jobs. I have a Fine Arts degree, specializing in Painting, drawing and Ceramics, and also completed a Make Up Artist course. I also worked at the Body Shop for a few years as a manager and make up artist - where my interest in natural products intensified. My Mom (Fran) is a librarian, but has run a successful business before. I think I got my entrepreneurial skills from her!

Is there a story behind the name of your shop?
We wanted it to sound like the way you would end a letter: "yours, naturally" Just simple and clean.

How long have you been creating for?
I started making the baby balm in February 2009, and started selling them under the Yours, naturally label in April 2009.

Is your business a hobby, a profession or a happy marriage of both?
We are trying to make it into a fully fledged business! We would both LOVE to be making enough money with this to support our families!

Describe your work setting.
The Kitchen mostly!

Do you work alone? With a team? Do you engage your family or friends in the work? What is your process? How do you ensure you get your work done yet still have a life?
Usually team: Franda and Fran, although the whole family tends to get involved. From baby sitting duties (so we can get some work done!) to them helping out with some money when we need it!

Why do you do what you do? What inspires you? When do you get most excited?
We love the fact that we can supply a natural alternative that is AFFORDABLE! We love getting all those positive feedback from customers, and since we use all the products ourselves we know they work! I enjoy the creativity of the business. Not only do we get to make things, we do marketing, selling and promoting. It's stimulating and very rewarding!!

Have you ever been in business before?
Just selling my art, and doing some Make Up freelance. My Mom is the real business woman! As a child, I remember going to markets with her where she sold her art (Yes, she paints too!) and she owned and ran a shop for years back in South Africa, where we are from. I do have an extensive retail management background though.

At what point do you consider yourself successful?
I think we are doing pretty well now - but when we both can call this our only income, I will call us successful!

Where do you do your best thinking?
In bed when I'm supposed to be falling asleep... most annoying.

What stops you from giving up when you are frustrated?
I hate losing or admitting defeat. If you know me - you will know this. If I get challenged, or comments are made that someone doesn't think I can do it, I want to do it even more.

If you had time to learn a new skill what would it be?
Crochet and sewing!

When you are not involved in your craft/business- what can you usually be found doing
Playing with my 17 month old boy, Matthys, or just hanging out with my husband and family. We are all very family orientated!

Do you have a favourite handmade purchase?
Too many! At the moment it is a brooch by Ruby in the Dust - she made it with recycled embroidered fabric - I love it!

Do you buy on impulse or do you go out looking for something you need?
I go out for something I need - and end up buying that, and buying other things on impulse! My Mom is a real Libra - takes her AGES to make up her mind!

I come from a racing car-loving, cricket-playing Qld family where rugby really didn't get a look in. Hubby was more of an AFL freak & I made sure sport-watching TV time was limited only to that one sport for fear of going mad. Having said that, who am I to turn away the chance to represent my hubbies company at the All Blacks vs Wales game in Dunedin? I'm telling you, it had nothing to do with the lure of a child-free weekend in a gorgeous city, all expenses paid (wink, wink).

Now this rugby representing thingy was the whole shebang. Pre match dinner, coach to & from the stadium, hob-nobbing with head honchos of sponsoring companies & ex players alike & then a post match function. We're talking hours of pretending that you give a damn about the sport!

So it got me thinking that someone out there may be as ignorant as I am about the sport & may benefit of learning from my mistakes, or near mistakes!

Tip 1 - Research the game. Now I'm not talking read up on all the player stats etc but just do the basics like find out who they're playing & what colour that team are dressed in. This was my mistake number one. I turned up to the NZ vs Wales game in a bright red dress... Wales is red. How to stand out in a crowd of serious All Black supporters!

Tip 2 - Learn the lingo. I must admit I failed at this one too. It's not a 'goal'. It's a 'try' (I think). You could probably learn a few other terms to slip into conversation but I'm actually going by my lifes lesson of 'If you say "hola" to a Spaniard you're going to look like a nong when he rattles off in spanish and you can't understand'.

Tip 3 - Respect the tall old men. They may look like some doddery old grandpa who somehow snuck through security but 9 times out of 10 it's likely that they're some ex All Black great.

Tip 4 - Take your iphone. This kinda runs on from the above tip. When you're shown to your seat & you haven't the foggiest of the names on either side of you, do a quick google search! Or do a facebook call for help - although my friends were hopeless at coming to my rescue! Colin Mead & Richie Guy are quite 'up there' in the rugby world & it would've helped to know that they were revered players in their time!

Tip 5 - Take your ipod. Now this only came to me during the game when I glanced around at people in the crowd (not 'audience') & noticed ipods. I'm assuming they're listening to the game but oh how i could have enjoyed listening to my fave music. Note to self though... you'd probably want to try to avoid singing out loud or jiggling in your seat.

Tip 6 - Keep your arms down. If you're in a hob-nobbing section, the chances are you probably can't get away with doing the mexican wave with the rest of the stadium. I was dismayed that I couldn't join in the almighty wave of raising of arms & throwing of drink bottles that is the mexican wave :( The old bloke beside me looked a little disgusted with the whole thing.

Tip 7 - Know when to clap. Here's where the old guys next to you come in handy. Watch them ... when they clap, you clap. When they stand, you stand. If you're feeling game you may sneak in a few "oooohhhhs" & "aaaaahhhs" etc.

Tip 8 - Remember, teams swap sides at half time. Enough said.

And last but not least, make sure you pack the right clothes (no jeans) & shoes. Ten minutes before we were to leave I realised I had packed two odd high-heel boots (one brown & one black but both for the right foot). Off to the game I went with my nice Wales-red dress, black tights & black sequined high-tops (ie kinda like the original Converse but covered with sparkles)!

And the highlight of my night... I got to chat to the CEO of telecom. Yes, that's a little left field but I'm loving his TV ad at the moment (you can see it here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cwhXRxGlOcQ)!!! That guy can act better than many Shortland Street actors ;)

Twas a great night all in all. Totally bearable & I'd definitely do it again!

Please tell us who you are & what you do?

Helen Riley-Duddin, based in Dunedin and am best known for my range of magnetic wallscapes which I design and produce. This is just a fraction of my working life though, I'm also a design lecturer, graphic & communication designer, and of course, Mum (of one) and wife - and have become quite a proficient juggler of all these things!

How did you get started? Have you worked in other creative areas before the kind of work you’re doing now?

I started producing the magnetic wallscapes just 7 months ago when our daughter was 8 months old. I've always worked, studied and lived 'creativity' - but since Jemima's arrival and my shift from teaching design full-time a new source of inspiration emerged. It was from our transition from young working professionals to new parents whose living space was now shared with the delightful chaos of a growing child that sparked the concept of the wallscapes as something halfway between art and play.

I studied in Design and Marketing and have Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Commerce degrees - while I was studying I pursued all sorts of freelance and part time design projects. I currently teach part time on the Communication Design and Interior Design degree programmes at Otago Polytechnic. Jumping back years before that I would sell jewellery I made in my lunchtimes at High School and would hold stalls to sell painted lightbulbs and du-kit brooches at local markets whenever I could!

Is there a story behind the name of your shop?

hjrdDesign = the design work of Helen Jeanne Riley-Duddin.

I have to admit I didn't put a lot of thought into the name as at the time I was just intrigued to see what the world thought of my wallscapes -- now though I'm preparing a new name and branding!

How long have you been creating for?

I've been creating the wallscapes for 7 months. But creating started for me at a very early age! I still remember the buzz from winning a colouring competition, and the $1.50 prize for a photo entry at the local AMP show. I used to spend a lot of time painting, when I was younger I would design and create a new annual calender for my grandparents every year, I made clocks, jewellery, painted lightbulbs, loved photography and everyone's birthday or special occasion was celebrated with a handmade card.

Is your business a hobby, a profession or a happy marriage of both?

Until recently I justified it as a hobby, but my work has been so well received and it takes so much time that things are getting official...

Describe your work setting.

I'm lucky enough to have a separate studio amongst the garden in our backyard. When we bought our house it was a very ramshackle sleeput, its still pretty ramshackle but it's my space for creative chaos. It's great to have a separate place away from the house that I can 'go to work' to and 'come home' when I'm done each day despite 'working from home'.

Do you work alone? With a team? Do you engage your family or friends in the work? hjrdDesign is primarily run by me, but my husband is a significant contributor in the finances, photography and general strategising.

Through work I'm part of a huge team of talented designers who help to keep me current and challenged, and some of my close friends are great advisors.

What is your process? My process begins with conceptualising new wallscape designs, and a lot of time is spent sourcing the perfect materials to upcycle (chosen for their tactile and aesthetic qualities), once I produce them I photograph every set and package it with a custom label showing arrangement suggestions.

How do you ensure you get your work done yet still have a life?A life - what's that!? For the last 6 months or so I've been working day and night (to the early hours) whether it be designing wallscapes, producing them, marketing them, photography, photo-editing, networking, adding listings, teaching, marking, meeting, or designing other projects I'm currently employed for... So the search for finding time for 'having a life' is very much a current theme!

Why do you do what you do? What inspires you? When do you get most excited?

I've found real inspiration in a nostalgia for youthful experiences and imagination through watching Jemima grow and learn. I have to credit the concepts of the wallscapes to her undoubtedly. I do it because I love it, I've always loved designing and making, and it's wonderful to create things that she and us can enjoy together. The buzz of someone purchasing your work is the ultimate excitement that sparked me first when I was younger selling at markets.

Can you remember your first sale? What was it?

I think the first thing I ever sold was probably a toffee apple I made to sell alongside my painted lightbulbs and du-kit jewellery when I was about 13. The first magnetic wallscape I sold was on Trademe alongside bibs I was making at the time - I think it was a set of lovebirds made with fabric offcuts from my wedding dress! The designs have been refined since then, and I learnt a lot from my early Trademe customers who really encouraged me, several are now close supporters on Facebook.

Have you ever been in business before?

No, not officially! This is very exciting!

At what point do you consider yourself successful?

When every magnetic surface in New Zealand and beyond is graced with something from my magnetic wallscape range!

In the shorter term I look forward to hiring a team of fresh talented designers to help produce my ideas!

Where do you do your best thinking?

In that almost-surreal time just before I drift off to sleep - generally around 2am.

What stops you from giving up when you are frustrated?

A new order or enquiry on my range, lovely feedback from customers and positive publicity all keep me going through the challenges, and of course each time I see little Jemima and her friends enjoying interacting with their wallscapes.

If you had time to learn a new skill what would it be?

The font-geek in me wants to answer with typography design, but the craftsperson in me would love to find the time to learn crochet from my mum as she learned from her mum.

When you are not involved in your craft/business- what can you usually be found doing

Hmm this is a very rare occurance! I look after Jemima fulltime, so if I'm not teaching, or designing on other jobs I like to spend those precious free moments entertaining her with family and friends, at the gardens feeding the ducks, local cafes or happy day trips to coastal Kakanui to my parents' organic market garden.

Do you have a favourite handmade purchase?

I adore my Nikau necklace from Blackswan designs, and have worn it most days since Christmas when my husband gave it to me!

Do you buy on impulse or do you go out looking for something you need?

I'm guilty of both, especially the former!

Like most parents during the wet season I whisk my kids outdoors at the slightest promise of sunshine. Today was one of those iffy days where it's sunny over my house but storm clouds threaten from afar. But we braved it & headed a half hours drive away to my favourite beach on the outskirts of Auckland.

Maraetai beach has white sand (albeit a little crunchy with crushed shells), a gorgeous wharf, beautiful green rolling hills & delightful little cafe to top it off.

There are so many worthy causes to support but this one in particular really touched me. It may be the fact that as a parent my heart breaks when I hear of sick children; & it definitely has something to do with wanting to support local families in need; & then there's the fact that I'm grateful that I'm in a position to help others at the moment.

Grab the tissues (if you are like me) & read on ... In 2007 Myka & Jon (pictured above) lost their first born son Tyler at only 3 months old from a serious heart condition. Now with one healthy daughter their youngest son has been diagnosed with the same condition. At only 6 months old he's already undergone two open heart surgeries only for the surgeon's to tell them there isn't much more they can do. This family has been through so much in the past few years and are now facing this all over again....their greatest wish is for Jon to be able to spend more time at home with them as a family but with a mortgage and all that goes with a young family he needs to stay in full time work.

So... We (& I mean hundreds of normal people like you & me) are trying to help make this families wish come true so Jon can at least cut a few working weeks short.

Please tell us who you are & what you do?

Hi, I'm Roslyn from Beinzstalk a fun and funky clothing label that clothes beans (newborns) to stalks (approx 10 years old). Beinzstalk is depicted by simple styles that are transformed into unique creations with the use of colour, texture, fun prints and embellishment. Quality fabric and craftmanship is paramount. Wherever possible garment adjustability accommodates ever growing bodies.

Beinzstalk also has other fun stuff like beanbags, swimming ponchos, various carry bags and handbags, stylish aprons and blankets. Detachable embellishments like brooches, cuffs and necklaces also make fun accessories that add a creative touch to any outfit.

How did you get started? Have you worked in other creative areas before the kind of work you’re doing now?

Having worked in a very non-creative environment all my career I seized the opportunity soon after my first child was born to enjoy some creative freedom. I started with hats and before I knew it other products kept sprouting up. Even though the business background is useful doing creative things is far more satisfying.

Is there a story behind the name of your shop?

The name had to meet several criteria - be suitable for children as well as babies, boys as well as girls and be a bit funky. I was forced into changing the spelling when listing the business (while living across the ditch) as beanstalk had already been taken. Determined to still use the name and seeing an opportunity to not conform I changed the spelling and managed to fit in a bit of NZ at the same time - beinNZstalk.

How long have you been creating for?

I've always enjoyed the creative process even as a child. At school dressmaking was great and I soon learnt how to get the opportunity to use the best machines of the day. The slow mechanical singers just didn't stack up against the fancy berninas. Ironically now most of machines are industrial and really are more similar to the old singers.

My Mum was a great role model too embracing many crafts as well as dressmaking while I was growing up.

Describe your work setting.

Creative chaos. One room dedicated to machines, fabrics, other materials and finished product. It looked like a big room when it was empty but alas - not big enough at all.

Why do you do what you do? What inspires you? When do you get most excited?

I'm very visual so patterns and colour combinations in nature, fabrics, creative blogs and magazines with lots of pictures cook up a storm in my brain. Customers with great feedback, my kids, the tui singing perfectly every morning, a sunny day in Autumn all inspire.

Over the last year I have also been truly inspired by the work at the uniform project http://www.theuniformproject.com/year1/monthly/May.html where an amazing woman wore 1 black dress for 365 and managed to change the look with accessories and other clothing items all repurposed or thrifted. While doing this she has raised nearly $US100k for Indian slum children to be able to go to school. Fashion, sustainability and helping others - what a powerful combination.

Can you remember your first sale? What was it?

A beanie. I was amazed and encouraged that someone liked what I did enough to buy it.

Have you ever been in business before?

No but its in my blood. I grew up seeing first hand what owning your own business was all about - the excitement, the influence, the challenge and the hard work.

At what point do you consider yourself successful?

When my label is sought after (because its uniqueness/quality are valued) to such an extent that supply can't meet demand.

Where do you do your best thinking?

At the sewing machine or pounding the pavements.

What stops you from giving up when you are frustrated?

Knowing that many famous people had their best eureka moments when highly frustrated and supposedly run out of ideas. Even though all their friends have long given up on them they kept going. If they hadn't we wouldn't have many of the things we take for granted today - light bulbs, phones etc

If you had time to learn a new skill what would it be?

To play the saxophone - nothing beats the oozy music made by a sax.

When you are not involved in your craft/business- what can you usually be found doing

Family, friends and providing a taxi come cheerleader service for kids. This year I have also taken on some voluntary work within Guiding. Plenty of room there to keep the creative brain active while doing some good for young kids today.

Do you have a favourite handmade purchase?

One for the Aussies .... We love MAROON!

If you haven't already guessed, I'm still Aussie at heart even thought I've been in NZ for nearly 5 years! Everyone who knows me knows that I'm quite allergic to exercise & go into anaphylactic shock if I have to watch any sport on tv (especially cricket - sorry Dad). BUT I do put up with the State of Origin series, not because I understand the game, or even like it for that matter, but I LOVE watching people watching it!

There's always at least one person who thinks that they can somehow help the players if they physically swerve around 'dodging' the opponents on tv. And then there's the person who tends to hold their breath when something intense is happening - just watch their face turning redder & redder until at last they have to inhale an almighty breath, ready for the next intense play. Oh, & the people who 'whoop' around the lounge at the wrong moments & then get all embarrassed that they actually cheered on the wrong team (oh, is that one me?!?).

Yep, gotta love origin night!

Please tell us who you are & what you do?

imba is Catherine McAra. I’m a Mum (I have an 18-month old daughter called Molly), I live in Wellington, and I design and make beautiful babywear: whimsical, contemporary & delightful designs for new babies through to age four. New Zealand designed. New Zealand made.

How did you get started? Have you worked in other creative areas before the kind of work you’re doing now?

imba began when my daughter was a few months old. Bibs were an essential item for her – but I couldn’t seem to find any that looked great and functioned well. So I set about designing and creating a line of baby bibs that fit well, absorbed spills, looked fabulous, and kept clothes dry. I then began designing and making clothing, and I now have a small range of seasonal items in natural fibres and wearable styles.

Is there a story behind the name of your shop?

Yes! I asked my 5-month old daughter for a suggestion: "imba!" she said. The name stuck.

How long have you been creating for?

Almost one year. I think there must be a birthday party coming up soon....

Is your business a hobby, a profession or a happy marriage of both?

It’s a hobbfession. Or a profobby. Very much a happy marriage of hobby and profession. I love what I do – the creative process is just the way I tick. I’d go mad if I couldn’t design and make stuff.

Describe your work setting.

My workspace is my home. It’s a flexible arrangement – the work moves around with me according to how much space I need. I have a little loft and a big cupboard for storing fabrics, fold-out trestle tables for cutting and designing, and a small worktable for the sewing machines. My latest acquisition is a fabulous 1940’s roller press – it can iron a bolt of fabric fast!

Do you work alone? With a team? Do you engage your family or friends in the work? How do you ensure you get your work done yet still have a life?

Until recently I’ve worked entirely on my own. Designing, cutting, sewing, finishing, marketing, etc. Recently I’ve contracted the help of a couple of machinists in order to get some big wholesale orders completed in a short timeframe – however everything in my Little Kiwis Nest store (and at my market stalls) is entirely hand-made by me.

My daughter likes to wear the finished items, but I don’t work while she’s awake. I sew and design during her afternoon nap time. I’d love to have more time to design and sew – there are so many ideas in my workbook and fabrics in my cupboard – just not enough nap-times to see it all happen!

What is your process?
My work process is straightforward one: I think of the style I want to create then find the fabrics (or sometimes the other way around). Many of my fabrics I import from overseas. Then I wash, tumble dry and iron the fabrics. Preshrinking means that the finished garment won’t shrink or warp in the wash, and that’s the result I want. Then I refer to my sizing charts and pattern blocks and begin drafting my pattern. I sew a toile/trial to make sure it’s working the way I want it to, and then I’ll cut the garments in a range of sizes from one piece of fabric. Sewing happens next – I lay out and work all the same seams at the same time. Then I quality check, take photographs and write my online listings.

Why do you do what you do? What inspires you? When do you get most excited?

It’s a compulsion! I'm a visual magpie - colour, shape, line, textures, found objects, combinations and contrasts - my eyes like picking them out and piecing them together. Working from home also allows me to be full-time Mum to my daughter. I get most excited watching her grow up – stringing funny words together, walking, learning – it’s an incredible process to watch.

Can you remember your first sale? What was it?

Yes – it was a baby bib I sold to my Mum!

Have you ever been in business before?

Nope – it’s all new, although I’ve been doing the accounts for my husband’s photography business for several years, so I’m familiar with that side of things.

At what point do you consider yourself successful?

When the balance is right – time for family, time for work, time for housekeeping, fun, friends...

Where do you do your best thinking?

In the bath.

What stops you from giving up when you are frustrated?

I know it’s part of a process.

If you had time to learn a new skill what would it be?

Video editing.

When you are not involved in your craft/business- what can you usually be found doing

Spending time with my daughter and family. Visiting my friends and my sister. Walking. Doing housework!

Do you have a favourite handmade purchase?

For me: A paua ring (it has a naturally formed hole in the centre) that my husband gave me. For Molly: a crocheted cloche hat made by Lisa Van Klaveren of Holland Designs.

Do you buy on impulse or do you go out looking for something you need?

Very much both.

1. What is the last thing that made you belly laugh? Last night my daughter said I was cooking bibles for her dinner! She meant spirals (pasta).
2. What book is on your bedside table? A notebook full of ideas, reminders, and notes to self!

4. Where do you hide your secret stash of chocolate? Shhhh! It’s secret!

5. What was your cheapest holiday? Many years ago on the Catlin Coast in Southland (in a tiny puptent).

Meet the Maker - Little Lizzies

Please tell us who you are & what you do?

Amanda Gray, Little Lizzies. I make knitted garments with a unique twist, such as the Asymmetric Poncho, using both recycled and new fibres. My favourite fibres to work with, are those with Bamboo in them as they create a lovely soft garment.

How did you get started? Have you worked in other creative areas before the kind of work you’re doing now?

I used to sew when I was younger before heading off to uni and at the time never even considered it as a career option. It wasn't until I was pregnant with my second child that I sat down at the sewing machine again. At the time I didn't really like a lot of the fashion that was around, and having children who were big/tall for their age, they needed clothing that was appropriate for them. Added to this my second child had a disability and not knowing how severe it would be as she got older, it become obvious that I wouldn't be able to go out to work easily, so I enrolled in a Fashion Design Course at the local Polytech.

The knitting side of things evolved out of my needing to find something to do at night, when I couldn't sit at the sewing machine, and not really being a knitter when I was younger, and I never expected it to last, but this time it all clicked. Next thing I designed the Aysmmetric Poncho and joined Little Kiwi's Nest!

Is there a story behind the name of your shop?

The name 'Little Lizzies' came about from my first daughter whose middle name is Elizabeth, and as it was because of her that I had chosen to go down the designer path, it seemed only fitting to name it after her.

How long have you been creating for?

The knitting side of things I have only been creating for the last 3 years, and have been a part of Little Kiwis Nest for about 8mths.

Describe your work setting.

I don't really have a special work area, as our house is on the small side, so I have stashes of wool and fabric all over the house. I do most of my knitting while watching tv, and sometimes I'll even knit while sitting at the computer.

Why do you do what you do? What inspires you? When do you get most excited?

I do what I do, because I love creating things, that sense of satisfaction in knowing that you made it! I get inspired by all sorts of things such as the textures and colours of fabrics and yarns. My daughter Molly also inspires me as she had to fight hard to be here when she was a baby. I get most excited when I try a new technique for the first time and it works. I also love it when my kids get excited about what I'm doing.

Can you remember your first sale? What was it?

My first sale was over the Xmas period in 2008 when I was sharing a stall with another friend at a local market. I sold one of the very first Aysmmetric Ponchos I had designed, made from 100% bamboo.

Where do you do your best thinking?
When I'm out walking.

If you had time to learn a new skill what would it be?

I've been teaching myself how to crotchet, but I would also love to know how to do macrame.

When you are not involved in your craft/business- what can you usually be found doing
Either helping out with school fundraisers, walking or Blogging about kids with special needs etc in my new blogzine (www.handsupnz.wordpress.com)

Party season is about to hit both Amy & my (ie LKN's founders) households next month. Amy has had a hectic year so has postponed her two cherubs birthdays until she settles into her new house. Coincidentally enough it just so happens to be bang smack in the middle of my two girls birthdays - which are only 10 days apart to start with! So you can imagine the building excitment & mammoth planning sessions happening around our dinner tables (& every waking moment inbetween!).

In my search to source party supplies I came across Zhakita Cake Designz & her GORGEOUS cakes. And to cut a long story short, Tania has just opened her store on Little Kiwis Nest! We are so excited to share her creations with you so please pop over to her shop to have a squiz.

Hi there, My name is Tania Pickett and I am the proud owner of Zhakita Cake Designz, a boutique cake design company in Swanson, West Auckland.

I have been married for 20 years to a wonderful husband Eugene and together we have a gorgeous 16 year old son Antony. Our life is busy and rewarding whether it be on the sports field supporing our son,showing our 4 samoyed dogs or spending quality time entertaining with family and friends

I have loved cake decorating since I was 12 years old and loved being able to create fun and funky cakes for Antony's birthday parties each year. I realised that that not everyone has the time etc to do this for their own children after being asked many times to do friends children's cakes.

So at the end of 2008 we started on the journey that soon became “Zhakita Cake Designz.” We have had installed a seperate commercial kitchen where I work from home and are proud to say we have an “A” grade certificate with the Waitakere City Council Health Department.

I am now working my business full time after finishing working at my previous employer of 10 years at the end of last year....and I LOVE IT !!

I specialise in children's birthday cakes, wedding cakes and any other occassions that call for a stunning centre piece.

In my store is just a small selection of cake designs but gives customers an idea of my work. If you want something different or custom designed for you, I'd love to turn your idea's into reality.

I'm passionate about what I do and that shows in the creations that leave my nest to yours
